Cinque Terre is the kind of place people plan a whole holiday around: five old fishing villages stacked into the cliffs above the sea. From Florence it is a fair drive, but an easy day out once someone else is doing the driving and working out the trains.
Is it worth doing as a day trip from Florence?
Honestly, yes, with one caveat. You will not get to know all five villages in a single day, and the middle hours can get busy in summer. But you will wander two or three of them properly, ride the little train along the coast, and still have time for lunch and a swim if the mood takes you. For most people on a Tuscany trip who would rather not change hotels, a day is plenty.
How the day works
Your driver collects you in Florence in the morning and takes you to La Spezia, on the edge of the national park, about two and a half hours away and mostly motorway. Cars cannot go into the villages, so from there you hop on the local train that links them in five minutes each, or a boat when the sea is calm. Your driver waits and brings you back whenever you are ready, so there is no last train to worry about.
Driver, train or a group tour?
There is more than one way to get there, and the right one depends on how you like to travel.
| Option | Roughly | How it feels |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver | The priciest | Door to door, just your group, leave and return when you like |
| Group coach tour | Mid-range | Cheaper, but a set route and someone else’s timings |
| Regional train | The cheapest | A change or two at Pisa or La Spezia, fixed timetable, on foot at both ends |
For a day this far from base, most of our guests decide the private option earns its keep.

Good to know
How long is the drive from Florence?
Around two and a half hours each way to La Spezia, where the village train starts.
Can we see all five villages?
You can pass through all five, but walking two or three at a relaxed pace makes for a better day.
Can we swim?
Yes. Monterosso has the only proper beach, so pack a swimsuit if you are coming in summer.
When is the best time to go?
Late spring and September are the sweet spot. July and August are beautiful but crowded.
